Micro-needling (Micropen)

MicroPen™ Micro-needling uses tiny sterile needles to safely and precisely create controlled micro-injuries to the skin, triggering new collagen production. It is used to improve the skin’s tone and texture, reduce pigmentation and improve scars and stretch marks.  The benefits of micro-needling are a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging.  Micro-needling also has a positive effect on hyper-pigmentation as well as on hypo-pigmentation, acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks and generally creates a fresher appearance or glow to the skin.  The treatment can be performed on all parts of the body: Face, Neck, Décolleté, Arms, Hands, Legs, Abdomen and Back. The procedure is performed by an esthetician and takes about 15-30 minutes.

FAQ’s about the Micropen Micro-needling

HOW MANY MICROPEN™ TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED AND WHEN DO YOU START TO SEE BENEFITS?

Typically a series of 3–5 treatments is performed for optimal results; however, each treatment will induce some collagen remodeling and micro-needling can be used for ongoing maintenance.

HOW IS MICROPEN™ DIFFERENT FROM LASERS?

Unlike lasers, Eclipse MicroPen™ breaks up pigment mechanically and remodels the collagen without heat. Removing heat from the equation makes for a safer, more comfortable treatment with a very low complication rate.

HOW LONG DOES A MICROPEN™ TREATMENT TAKE?

Treatment time will vary depending on the surface area treated but typically will range from 15–30 minutes.  Because a topical anesthetic may be applied ahead of time plan to spend between 30–60 minutes in the office.

DOES THE MICROPEN™ TREATMENT HURT?

Deeper micro-needling treatments can be uncomfortable so a topical anesthetic will typically be applied ahead of time to reduce any discomfort. More superficial treatments are well-tolerated without any anesthetic.

WHAT DO I LOOK LIKE RIGHT AFTER AND HOW MUCH DOWN TIME IS THERE?

Immediately after a micro-needling treatment the skin can appear flushed like a light sunburn to deeper pink with pinpoint bleeding for deeper treatments. Typically any redness will resolve within 1–2 days. Make-up can be applied immediately.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS?

Mild discomfort and redness are common effects. Very rarely, treatments could lead to a cold sore reactivation or other infection, formation of granulomas (small bumps under the skin), permanent color change or scarring.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE TREATMENT?

Let your provider know if you have a history of cold sores or warts on the targeted area.

WHAT IS THE AFTERCARE?

Ice packs or cool compresses can be used to soothe the skin. Practice good sun protection and avoid abrasive topicals or treatments for 2–3 days.

ARE THERE ANY CONTRAINDICATIONS TO HAVING THE TREATMENT DONE?

You should not have micro-needling if you have vitiligo, have an active skin infection (such as flat warts or a cold sore), or have taken isotretinoin within the past 6 months. Please notify your provider if you are prone to excessive/keloid scarring or have a collagen vascular disease such as lupus.

This stimulates a process of collagen production through the skin’s healing mechanism.

MicroPen For Acne Scars

Micropen can have help to reduce acne scars. The three most common types of acne scars are ice pick scars, boxcar scars and rolling scars. Depending on the type of scar you have, we will customize your Micropen treatment to meet the individual scar formations on your skin. Your treatment settings are unique and often varying depths are utilized to be more aggressive on some areas, and less aggressive on others. This is truly couture skincare!

Ice Pick Scars

Ice Pick scars are the most common type of scarring caused by acne, they get their name from the manner in which the scars form, they are shaped like the hole left from an ice pick. Ice Pick acne scars are deep and narrow, which makes it difficult for them to be filled up naturally with collagen and some are too deep to heal entirely. These acne scars are usually less than 2mm across and usually caused by inflamed comedones (blackheads) or acne vulgaris (whiteheads).

Boxcar Scars

Boxcar acne scars are similar to Ice Pick scars, however the Boxcar scars are wide and more rectangular with vertical edges. Boxcar scars are usually found on the temples and cheeks, they can be deep or shallow, but the majority of Boxcar scars are not as deep as Ice Pick scars.

Rolling Scars

Rolling scars are the least common of the three, typically they are shallow and wide. Rolling scars are caused by damage under the upper most surface of the skin, they are round and give the skin a rolling, wave-like appearance.
